Every April, farmers across India watch the same thing I watch: the ENSO status bulletin, the Indian Ocean Dipole reading, and IMD's long-range forecast update. These three inputs together shape the entire Kharif sowing season — what to plant, how much to plant, whether to gamble on a water-intensive crop or play it safe with drought-tolerant varieties.

For 2026, here's my honest read of what the season looks like and what it means for agriculture across different regions.

The Big Picture: A Largely Normal Season

IMD's 2026 long-range forecast puts total seasonal rainfall at around 97–99% of the Long Period Average — technically "Normal" in the official classification. The ENSO situation is neutral, with no strong El Niño developing, which removes a major risk factor. The IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole) is slightly positive, which historically nudges the monsoon toward slightly above-normal performance, particularly for the southern peninsula.

What this means in practice: no major nationwide drought, no flood emergency either. But "normal overall" always masks significant regional variation, and that's where the real farming decisions lie.

Regional Rainfall — Reading Between the Lines

The southern peninsula looks well-supplied. Strong Arabian Sea activity and a positive IOD signal should deliver good rainfall to Kerala, Karnataka, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. For the coastal Konkan belt, expect active monsoon spells well into September. Rice and sugarcane cultivation should have adequate water.

Central India — Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, northern Karnataka — is the zone I'm watching most carefully. This region often gets below-normal July rainfall even in "normal" years due to the monsoon trough behaviour. Soybean farmers in Vidarbha particularly need well-distributed July rain for the pod-filling stage. A brief dry spell in late July could hurt yields even if the June and August totals look fine.

The Indo-Gangetic plains — Punjab, Haryana, western UP — should see reasonable monsoon progression, though the onset might lag by a week or so compared to the southern advance. That's within normal variance. The paddy transplanting window typically opens in mid-June for nurseries and mid-July for main fields, and this season should accommodate that schedule without major disruption.

Northeast India is the one region where I'd flag a watchful eye. Assam has been dealing with increasingly erratic Brahmaputra flooding patterns, and if active Bay of Bengal systems cluster in that zone, it could mean above-normal rainfall and flood risk, even in a nationally "normal" season.

What Farmers Should Be Doing Right Now

This is aimed specifically at smallholder farmers who are making actual decisions with this information. A few things that are worth doing regardless of where in the forecast range this season lands:

First, don't over-commit to water-intensive crops purely because a normal monsoon is forecast. Normal national averages don't protect individual fields from localised dry spells. If your taluka has seen irregular distribution in the last three seasons, that local pattern matters more than the state-level projection.

Second, if you're in central India, consider splitting your sowing between your primary commercial crop and a more drought-tolerant alternative. A 70/30 split between cotton and pigeon dal, or soybean and sesame, gives you coverage if July rainfall disappoints.

Third — and I say this every year — register on your state's Agromet Advisory portal and actually read the weekly district-level advisories. IMD issues these specifically to guide field-level decisions like irrigation timing, fertiliser application, and pest management. They're free, and they're worth more than a generic national forecast.

A normal monsoon year is still a year that requires attention, flexibility, and good local information. The farms that do best aren't the ones that got lucky — they're the ones that planned carefully and adapted quickly.
