Someone always brings up a cold January day when I'm talking about global warming, as if one chilly morning in Delhi is evidence against decades of temperature records. It's a misunderstanding that comes from conflating two fundamentally different things: the weather happening right now, and the climate pattern built up over decades.
The distinction isn't pedantic. It's the difference between looking at today's stock price and looking at a ten-year trend. Both are real. They operate on completely different timescales and tell you completely different things.
Weather Is What's Happening Now
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. It's what you feel when you step outside: the temperature, the wind, whether it's raining or sunny or hazy. Weather is highly localised and constantly changing. The weather in Kolkata right now might be completely different from the weather in Bengaluru 1,800 km away. It can change meaningfully within hours — anyone who's been caught by a Mumbai afternoon thunderstorm that appeared from a clear sky can confirm this.
Weather forecasting is the attempt to predict how these atmospheric conditions will evolve over the next hours, days, or at most a couple of weeks. Beyond two weeks, the chaotic nature of atmospheric dynamics makes specific day-by-day prediction essentially impossible with current technology.
Climate Is the Long-Term Pattern
Climate is what you'd describe if someone asked you "what's the weather like in Jaisalmer?" — not the answer for today, but the typical conditions across years and decades. The standard definition uses 30-year averages: what's the average temperature in a given month, what's the average rainfall in a given season, how often do extreme events occur. These "climate normals" are recalculated every decade by meteorological agencies.
Climate tells you what to expect broadly. Weather tells you what to prepare for specifically. You need both. If you're buying a flat in Chennai, climate data tells you to expect a northeast monsoon season and the occasional cyclone. Weather data the week you're moving in tells you whether to bring an umbrella that specific day.
Climate Change Is a Shift in the Normals
When scientists talk about climate change, they're talking about a systematic shift in those 30-year averages. The average maximum temperature in Indian cities in May has risen. The frequency of days above 45°C has increased. Extreme rainfall events have become more intense and concentrated. These are changes in the statistics of weather — not a single event, but what kind of events happen how often.
This is why a single cold day or a single cool summer doesn't "disprove" climate change — it's one data point against a trend built from millions of observations over decades. Conversely, a single hot summer or dramatic flood doesn't "prove" climate change on its own either. The signal is in the long-term pattern, not the individual event.
Keeping these two timescales separate in your head helps make sense of weather apps, seasonal forecasts, and climate science discussions — and helps you see them as complementary pieces of information rather than contradictions.
